How about a Charleston Christmas story before the new year comes rolling in? This was sent to us via an anonymous email. Off we go in a cloud of snow! Well, not really. It is Charleston, after all. More like a cloud of gun smoke.
It seems a loving husband decided to give his wife a fancy new camera for Christmas. The wife was excited! They decided to load the entire family in the car and drive downtown to play "tourist in your own town" and try out the new photographic gear. After taking some nice shots at The Battery, the family piled back into the car and decided to drive around downtown looking for interesting things to photograph. After a few moments of driving the back streets they found themselves on Cleveland Street. As the family drove down the street they observed a group of black males walking on the sidewalk. When the family's car approached this group one black male split off and ran toward the car. The black male was pointing a handgun at the passenger side of the vehicle. Did we mention there were kids in the car? The driver made the smart decision to hit the gas and speed away while the other adult passenger was busy yelling, "Put your heads down!!", at the children. After clearing the area the family notified CPD.
In case you were wondering, this happened in the middle of the day.
So, what was the final result of playing "tourist in your own town"? Just a couple of highly traumatized children who are now afraid of those thugs coming to their home to shoot them and a set of parents who have the vivid image of a thug pointing a firearm at their children.
Recommendation: If you decide to play "tourist in your own town" anywhere near downtown Charleston, either ask for a police escort (not likely) or make sure you have your CWP, your weapon, and enough ammo to thin out the herd and discourage the thugs.
